"The tale is enthralling. . . . Sansom describes 16th-century events in the crisply realistic style of someone watching them transpire right outside his window. . . . Don't believe those tapestries of pretty lords and ladies happily hunting unicorns: The Middle Ages were murder."―Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review"Longtime readers of this superb series will know what to expect on every level: sharply drawn characters, particularly Shardlake himself, who has grown into one of the most well-textured leading characters in the entire genre... Tombland is the latest in what is easily one of the best ongoing mystery series currently being published."―Christian Science Monitor"Outstanding . . . Non-mystery readers interested in Tudor England will be equally enthralled."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)C.J. Sansom is the bestselling author of the critically-acclaimed Matthew Shardlake series, as well as the runaway #1 international bestsellers Dominion and Winter in Madrid. He lives in Sussex, England.
Least favorite I'm a fan of the Shardlake series, but this one... was a slog. As other reviewers have noted, the section (the very large section) of the book that takes place in the camp is excruciatingly dull and seems to go on forever. There is also a tiresome abundance of psychopaths--a pair of murderous twins, a deranged, homicidal grandfather, a coldly murderous schemer, a yeoman with a disproportionate and violent grudge, plus the usual loathesome selfishness and entitlement from the privileged classes. And psychopaths tend to make such _dull_ two-dimensional characters--one is bore, but five (or more?) are really hard to take. That said, I really liked the author's depiction of how pervasive and cult-like the support for the class system was at the time. It's been an ongoing theme of the series, and was even more central here. The class system wasn't just some random historical contingency--it was an ideology that was actively reinforced and viciously defended by the elites, even by the more principled and kindly elites.Rivetting Another gripping and convincing historical novel that I could not bear to put down. I can hardly wait for the next one.Marvelously Exciting, Compelling, Thrilling and Enthralling A master story teller and another great adventure with M. Shardlake. I cannot put this one down, every page a winner. Revelation, Sovereign, Dark Fire, Dissolution, Heartstone and Lamentation were all so exciting and marvelous in the extreme. Sansom captures you from the very start of each brilliant book and takes you through the Tudor times like never before then grips you into a masterclass world of suspense. Also told with a great sense of humor with the occasional social commentary that only a true master of literature can perform. Thank you C.J.
